Tips for Getting Your Anxious Pup Comfortable with Grooming

Pet grooming of some sort is a must for helping keep animals healthy, but many puppies don’t quite see it the same way. It’s extremely common for puppies and adult dogs alike to get anxious at the mere hint of pet grooming, but there are things you can do to calm your animal’s nerves and turn grooming into a positive experience. The sooner you start working on these tips with your puppy, the better, but even older dogs can be taught to relax during grooming with a little effort.

Handle Your Puppy

The more comfortable your puppy becomes with being handled, the easier time he or she will have while being groomed. Pet your dog often while talking softly to ensure he or she is relaxed. If your dog is just starting to get used to this kind of interaction, start simply with head scratching and eventually move on to rubbing his or her belly, legs, tail, and paws. Stay calm and continue praising your puppy while you’re petting. Handling your puppy this way often, especially the paws, which many dogs would rather not be touched, will help your dog get comfortable with the kind of handling the groomer needs to do.

Try Home Brushing

You can further get your dog ready for grooming by making brushing part of your home care routine. As with handling your dog, you may need to be patient and slowly introduce brushing to your pet. Once he or she is comfortable with the brush, do longer sessions, and don’t allow your dog to get up until you’re ready, so he or she gets used to not controlling the brushing.

Talk to Your Vet

Your veterinarian can be an extremely valuable source of information that can help get your puppy ready for grooming. He or she may be able to recommend training techniques and classes, as well as good groomers. If your vet has a pet groomer in his or her animal clinic, like the Chastain’s do, that could be a good choice for your pet.
