Watch out for Ticks this Spring & Summer

Spring and summer will be here before we know it – and so will the fleas and ticks. External parasites, as we all know, can bring some nasty diseases to our pets.  That’s why our annual preventive blood testing at Chastain Veterinary Medical Group screens for tick-borne diseases including Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis. Screening every year is important because there have been at least 48 confirmed cases a year of Lyme Disease or Erlichiosis in dogs in Dallas and Collin counties in recent years.  In truth, there is probably much more than that because so many dogs suffer in silence, without diagnosis or treatment.  Signs of tick-borne disease can include fever, lameness, skin rashes, lack of energy, and decreased appetite or water intake. Wandering raccoons, possums, coyotes, deer and other wildlife, along with a warm winter, means we’ll likely see more ticks this year. If you are not certain your dog has been tested recently, please contact us today to make arrangements for testing and flea/tick prevention. Watch the video below to see the life cycle of a tick and to get tips on how to react if you find one on your pet.

Here at Chastain Veterinary Medical Group, we are equipped to handle all kinds of tick issues, including removal and treatment of diseases. However, the best plan is prevention, which is why we recommend complete flea and tick control, for each and every pet, all year long.  Contact us  at Preston Road Animal Hospital of Dallas by calling (972) 239-1309 or at Meadow Brook Animal Hospital of McKinney by calling (972) 529-5033 for more information.
